Long before the crack of a firearm echoed across the English countryside, hunters relied on a dog that would freeze motionless the moment it detected hidden game — and that freezing posture gave the Setter its very name. The English Setter's roots reach back at least to the 14th–15th century in Britain, where, according to the English Setter Association of America (ESAA), early progenitors were trained to crouch low on their front legs — 'setting' — when they located birds, so the hunter could cast a wide net over both dog and quarry. This crouching behavior was the primary hunting technique long before firearms existed; the dog's posture was, in effect, a living trap trigger.
