The Poodle's story begins not in the salons of Paris, but in the marshes and rivers of northern Europe — most likely Germany, though the question of national origin remains diplomatically contested to this day. The breed's very name encodes its original purpose: the English word 'Poodle' derives from the German *Pudel*, meaning 'to splash in water,' while the French name *Caniche* comes from *canard* (duck) or *cane* (female duck), both pointing to the same function — a supremely capable waterfowl retriever. As the AKC, the British Kennel Club, and the Canadian Kennel Club all acknowledge, Standard Poodles most likely originated in Germany, where the breed appears in sketches by Albrecht Dürer as early as the 15th–16th centuries.
