Of all the world's companion breeds, the Chihuahua carries one of the oldest and most spiritually charged lineages. Its direct ancestor is the Techichi, a small, stocky, silent dog maintained by the Toltec civilization of central Mexico from at least the 9th century CE — ceramic effigies of Techichi-type dogs from Colima, Mexico have been dated to between 100 BC and AD 300, suggesting the relationship between humans and this dog type stretches back even further. When the Aztecs absorbed Toltec culture, the Techichi was absorbed with it, becoming a possession of the nobility and serving roles that were simultaneously spiritual and practical: the dogs were believed to guide the souls of the deceased to the underworld, and they were also kept as warmth-giving companions.
