A short excerpt to begin

From the history chapter in this edition: a short reading sample.

Few breeds can claim an origin as precisely documented as the Border Collie's. The breed developed along the rugged Anglo-Scottish border, a landscape of open hills and vast grazing commons that demanded a sheepdog capable of working independently across long distances, reading sheep movement without constant human direction. The term 'collie' is believed to derive from an old Celtic word for 'useful,' and from the earliest recorded use it referred to working herding dogs rather than a fixed physical type. The mechanism of the breed's development was almost entirely functional: shepherds selected dogs not for looks but for the capacity to control large flocks silently and efficiently, minimising livestock stress and maximising the speed of mustering.
