Few modern breeds carry the weight of a blood sport so literally written into their bodies. The English Bulldog can be traced to medieval England: according to William Lawlor's 1938 *Blue Book of Bulldogs*, the first official bull-baiting event on English record dates to 1210, held in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and the dog developed for that sport is the direct ancestor of today's breed. Bull-baiting — in which a dog was set upon a tethered bull — was not mere spectacle; it was also widely believed at the time to tenderize the bull's meat before slaughter, giving the practice an economic justification that helped it survive for over six centuries.
