Few breeds can trace their working mandate as precisely as the Smooth Fox Terrier. In 18th-century England, mounted fox hunts demanded two very different dogs working in tandem: the hounds pursued the fox across open country, and a smaller, fearless dog was needed to dive underground into the earth to bolt it back out so the chase could continue. That dog became the Smooth Fox Terrier. The earliest documented evidence of a recognisably modern specimen dates to 1790, when Colonel Thomas Thornton commissioned artist Sawrey Gilpin to paint his white-coated female terrier named Pitch — the first known record of a predominantly white terrier of this type.
